FilterPave®
FilterPave® is an exciting new porous pavement system that comes in five colors, each a sparkling mosaic of subtle glinting recycled glass particles. Ideal applications include driveways, sidewalks, nature trails and cart paths. While FilterPave is poured like concrete, it functions more like asphalt. It is an elastomeric pavement which is flexible. FilterPave is more porous than porous asphalt and pervious concrete.
FilterPave® is without a doubt the most attractive porous pavement system on the market. Unlike other products that have a lumpy and unfinished look. FilterPave® sports a smooth finish and diamond like sparkle in the sunlight. By contrast, other porous pavements have been described as rice-crispy-like with the bland color of concrete.
From the Developer’s Perspective
The developer’s first concern is usually maximizing the ROI (return on investment) of a project and it is up to the design engineers to design project plans that will be able to successfully navigate the permitting process. Storm water runoff is a one of the main determining factors that engineers must deal with while seeking building permits for a project. FilterPave® porous pavement reduces the amount of storm water runoff, which gives the engineer a valuable design tool.
The various water management districts in Florida regulate that new projects treat 0.5 inches of storm water runoff per event; this is typically accomplished by construction of retention ponds. These retention ponds consume a great deal of valuable real-estate and create ongoing maintenance expenses that can add hundreds of thousands to the annual cost of operation of a completed project.
New regulations that are in the process of implementation will increase the current 0.5 inches to 4 inches of storm water that will have to be treated. This will greatly increase the size of the retention ponds, taking up even greater amounts of valuable real-estate.
The Green Side of FilterPave®
The Green Building movement is here to stay. Engineers are constantly looking for green products that perform instead of just “being green” for marketing purposes while adding very little performance value to a project. For engineers that are constantly faced with the challenge of maximizing useable real-estate while adhering to the stringent regulations imposed by Federal, State, and local authorities, FilterPave® definitely fills the need for a functional and performing green product.
Residential Applications
Residential Customers can use FilterPave® for sidewalks, driveways, and patios. FilterPave® can also be combined with a rainwater collection system. The benefits of rainwater collection systems are water conversation and a drastic reduction of nutrient loaded water entering the aquifer. Nutrient rich water, the byproduct of fertilizing lawns and landscaping, is one of the leading threats to the aquifer.
